Need help changing the oil in your 2012 Jeep Patriot? Gather the materials you’ll need and follow these directions:
What you will need:

  • Large funnel
  • Filter changing tool
  • Replacement filter
  • Replacement motor oil
  • Plastic bin
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Recommended: plastic or latex gloves
  • Recommended: paper towels

Directions:

  1. Monitor the temperature display in the instrument cluster. Wait until the oil gauge shows as lukewarm. You want to ensure you are not draining dirty oil that will scald your hands and result in an injury.
  2. Put on the recommended plastic or latex gloves to keep your hands clean
  3. Slide under the vehicle from the front. If you aren’t comfortable with this, use a car jack and two car jack stands to raise the car for more room
  4. Find the oil pan. It looks like a large metal box and is located under the engine. There is a drain plug which sticks out from the bottom. Place the plastic bin underneath this plug
  5. Using the adjustable wrench, loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. After the plug loosens, use your hand to finish loosening it. Expect the dirty oil to pour quickly out of the drain. You should let it drain until no more comes out. Then replace the oil pan plug.
  6. Find the oil filter. It is hidden beneath the engine and it looks like a thick, white cylinder. Place the oil filter tool around the girth of the oil filter. Twist it counterclockwise until the filter is loose. Finish tightening it with your hands.
  7. Rub clean oil on the seal of the new oil filter with your gloved fingers. Next, twist the new oil filter onto the engine mount. Use your hands to start then use the oil filter tool to twist the clasp, turning it clockwise.
  8. Open the hood to your car and find the motor oil cap. Fill the engine with new oil after unscrewing the cap.
  9. Replace the motor oil cap. Pull out the dipstick which can be found by locating a yellow handle. The oil marking should be near the full tic, as indicated on the dipstick.
  10. Carefully shut the hood to your vehicle
  11. Discard your dirty gloves and paper towels.
