What are the RAM 4500 and 5500?

RAM 4500 and 5500 are the top two tiers of the RAM commercial truck lineup. Both are available in chassis cab configurations like the 3500, but with a higher diesel trailering rating and GCWR than the 3500. The newest models of both trucks are available in the following trim levels:

• Tradesman: The base model includes a turbodiesel engine, Uconnect 3.0, air conditioning, push-button start, and all of the lineup’s standard features.
• SLT: Notable additions on the SLT include cloth seats, accented interior finishes, heated and powered tow mirrors, and chrome exterior accents.
• Laramie: The Laramie adds luxury onto the Tradesman and SLT with a unique chrome grille, leather-trimmed seats, and 10-way power-adjustable heated seats. Uconnect also gets an upgrade to the 4.0 system. 
• Limited: Limited adds a 12-inch touchscreen, LED headlights and fog lamps, and leather seats with wood and aluminum trim. 

What is the Primary Difference Between RAM 4500 and RAM 5500 Trucks?

You’ll notice when comparing these two models that they’re very similar to each other in appearance and trim levels. That’s because the RAM 4500 and 5500 are almost identical. The main difference between the two lies in their trailering capability and Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR). These two models have higher numbers in both ratings than the 3500, and the 5500 is more capable than the 4500 in these areas. 

Trailering (Towing Capacity):

• 3500: 25,890 lbs.
• 4500: 29,770 lbs.
• 5500: 35,220 lbs.

GCWR (Maximum Combined Weight of Trailer, Vehicle, and Load):

• 3500: 33,000 lbs.
• 4500: 37,500 lbs.
• 5500: 43,000 lbs.

Several components and features, including the axles, chassis, and the truck’s weight, contribute to the differences in towing capacity and GCWR. Otherwise, the primary components, look, and features of the trucks are virtually the same.

What Packages and Customizations are Available for the RAM 4500 and 5500?

One of the best features of both the 4500 and 5500 is their customization capabilities. RAM offers a suite of options for both models, including a turbodiesel engine, gear and alternator options, and packages to boost the GVWR ratings.
