The Jeep Liberty is a vehicle that is able to handle driving on many terrains and can even handle off-roading. It was built with many features that allow it to handle such conditions, such as traction, maneuverability, and ground clearance.

Traction

What is traction? Traction allows the transfer of engine power into forward motion. Between the part-time Command-Trac tube or the full-time Selec-Trac systems, the Jeep Liberty gives the driver maximum traction in most any condition. One of the other features of the Jeep Liberty is the brake lock differential which uses the brake pressure to redistribute torque when it is needed.

Tips for enhanced traction:

• Steady driving
• Stay relaxed when behind the wheel
• Stay relaxed and steady on the throttle when experiencing surfaces such as sand, mud, or wet rocks
• If you start to lose traction, don’t stop. It is best to keep moving.
• If you start to lose traction, try moving the steering wheel back and forth to establish new grip
• Always steer straight on, when on hills
• If you cannot make it up a hill, back straight down. Never get sideways on a steep slope or hill

Maneuverability

What is maneuverability? It is the capability to steer around and avoid or crawl around obstacles. One of the great things about the Jeep Liberty is its ability to help steer and navigate through tight and twisty areas, like wooded trails or paths. Maneuverability is measured in three different ways:

1. Wheel base – distance between the front and rear axles
2. Track – the measurement between centers of wheels that are on the same axle
3. Turning radius – the tighter the turning radius, the easier it is to steer around obstacles

Ground Clearance

The Jeep Liberty was designed to maximize the distance between the ground and the bottom of the car. Ground clearance is measured three ways, when off-roading:

1. The Approach Angle
2. Break over angle, which is measured along the chassis between the two axles
3. Departure angle when clearing any sort of obstacle

It is important to be aware of your angles before you approach an obstacle for your safety and your vehicle’s safety. Off-roading can be dangerous and a challenge, so make sure that safety is a top priority. Try to go as slow as you can, but fast enough to clear obstacles. Taking your time and going slow will help you clear obstacles because the springs won’t be bouncing as much. When you are driving on uneven surfaces, try to aim your tires at the high spots so you don’t risk damaging the chassis. The Jeep Liberty is designed to crawl right over obstacles, but make sure you are being smart and safe.
